Skyline saw something in me before i did, changing my Life
Dr Tran, Class of 2009.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, we’ve raised almost $100,000 towards our $150,000 EOFY goal. To everyone who has donated so far, thank you for making a difference!
Dr Tran says, Skyline saw in me something special before I really could see it myself, and as a result, my life took a different path. I’ll always be thankful for their care and support, and I know I’m just one of many stories that show the impact of this incredible foundation.
In Year 10, while living in public housing, I was trying to keep it all together at school but felt completely adrift. That’s when Skyline came into my life, not just with academic support but with something much more powerful: belief.
They believed in me when I didn’t yet believe in myself.
Skyline provided me with the tools, confidence, and encouragement to envision a future beyond my circumstances. I completed my VCE, and with my confidence and sense of self bolstered by the support of Skyline, I went on to complete a Bachelor of Science at the the University of Melbourne, majoring in Cell and Developmental Biology. I then completed a Master of Science at the University of Melbourne, where I researched stem cell niche interactions in the Drosophila ovary and received the Helen R. Freeman scholarship.
I decided to pursue a PhD and relocated to Boston, MA, where I completed my doctorate at Tufts University in 2023. During my PhD, I conducted research in DNA repair biology, seeking to understand the “choices” made when DNA breaks and how it repairs itself during the critical and vulnerable period of DNA replication.
It was during my time in the US, teaching first-year biology to students from diverse backgrounds, that I realised something: my passion lies in giving back. In being the person who helps someone else see what they’re capable of.
Today, I teach Biology at Trinity College in Melbourne, and every time I stand in front of a classroom, I carry Skyline Education Foundation Australia with me”
