A LOOK AT SKYLINE

SKYLINE'S IMPACT CONTINUES

Continuing the annual independent evaluation of Skyline and building on evidence collected since 2011,  I+J Management Services have noted that Skyline develops and delivers three broad benefits for participating Students.

Repeated feedback shows that these benefits are still part of Skyline’s DNA. That is, Skyline adds values to the lives of young people through:

Opportunity… for talented but disadvantaged young people to realise potential.
Optimism… for young people, their families and their schools
Outcomes… in education, training and employment.

STUDENT MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Student mentorship with Australian leading law firm, Lander and Rogers.

An exciting mentoring opportunity with Australian law firm Lander and Rogers, has been offered to some of Skyline’s legal-minded Students and Alumni. As a leading firm, Lander and Rogers has collaborated with Skyline to offer priceless mentorship to Students hoping to pursue a career in commercial law. Throughout the year, 8 Skyline Students and Alumni will be working alongside internationally-recognised lawyers to gain first-hand insights into the sector.

Congratulations to Year 11 Students, Aditya, Martin, Tanisha, and Graedy; Year 12 Student, Emily; and Skyline Alumni, Malaz, Heba, and Mukul!

We would also like to thank the team at Landers for offering this incredible opportunity.

FROM THE SKYLINE TEAM
Term 1 will soon be drawing to a close – without the anxiety filled disruption experienced at the same time last year when Covid hit. Year 11 Students have been busy settling in, getting a feel of their new subjects for the year, and choosing Companion Teachers who play a vital role in supporting Students from within their School. Year 12 Students have been preparing for internal assessment (SACs) of the subjects they have chosen to sit for exams at the end of the year. We wish them well!

We also congratulate all Students who have gained leadership positions this year, amongst them Kayley Crees from Melton Secondary College, and Jordyn Gomez from Narre Warren South P-12 College who became School Captains.

Year 11 and 12 Students began tutoring sessions in March, offered by Skyline Hatch, the social enterprise that employs high ability Alumni as Tutors. Adrian Ferdinand (Class of 2011) has been helping shape the offer, along with Sally Watts, General Manager of Hatch. Great to see incredible uptake of these sessions!

SINCERE THANKS
For the last two years, Krystyna Campbell-Pretty AM, a significant philanthropist and donor to the National Gallery of Victoria, has provided the magic that enables all Skyline Students to access the Creative Learning Journey program created by the Skyline Team in conjunction with the Learning Team from the NGV. Pre-Covid this was an onsite experience, however last year and this year the program has needed to be delivered online.

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT

Narre Warren South P-12 College
Narre Warren South P-12 College has been a Skyline partner School since 2016, at the time the Bank of Melbourne supported an increase in schools and Students in the South East region. Fifteen Students have been awarded places in the Skyline Program, six of them this year – a mighty achievement. The School has 280 equivalent full-time Staff, 200 Teachers and 80 Education Support Staff.

The College is categorised as “low” compared to other State schools in socio-economic terms, and a strong feature of the College community is the cultural diversity, with at least 50 ethnic groups being represented speaking 64 languages.

More than half of the College’s student population comes from families where the language background is other than English, and around 50% qualify for the EAL program. We love that attendance rates at both Primary and Secondary levels are better than the state benchmarks, which shows strong support for the school as being central to the community. The College’s facilities for sport are also openly accessible, and central to, community groups.
